Mapping Reinvented: Leveraging Location Technology for Organizational Success

July 10, 2013
By: Richard Lin

We recently hosted a webinar about how the new class of location technologies is incredibly cost-effective, easy to use and are transforming everyday tasks. The webinar was a great success and so we thought our blog readers might enjoy learning some of these valuable tips too.

It’s no secret that mapping and GIS (Geographical Information Systems) are powerful decision tools. It’s also known that widespread adoption of mapping has been limited by its steep learning curve, high cost, and implementation challenges. These days, organizations are advancing towards web-based mapping solutions coupled with property information tools that are affordable and easy to use. With these benefits, organizations can empower their employees with emerging technologies, providing them with efficient access to information and map-based analysis tools to make qualified business decisions.

So what can organizations do to quickly get to the information they need about how to choose and leverage location technology? Below are some best practices’ tips you can get started utilizing right away:

1. Embrace New Location Technology Changes

New location technology has improved to better organizations overall.  The direction has shifted to web-based solutions that offer more flexibility, scalability, and ease of access. Additional requirements of new mapping include minimal training and organizational assets that are easy to integrate. Lastly, mobile-based solutions to access data on the go are also highly desired in today’s mapping solutions.

2. Understand the Expectations of Today’s Map Users

The widespread adoption of mapping has transformed the expectations of a map user in the digital age. Consumers are on an information mission and need to get in quickly, find information, and then get out. They require software that’s easy to use and want access in mere seconds. The data should be current, clean and correct and must be accessible anytime and anywhere, on any device.

3. Consult Our Mapping Solution Checklist

What should you look for in your new mapping solution? First, it needs to be consumer friendly and require minimal training. As mentioned before, it needs to integrate seamlessly with your existing data and be built on an open architecture that can be easily customizable. Secondly, choose a ready to use “out-of-the-box” tool that has base data already included, such as aerial images, property data, parcel lines, and hazards. Lastly, pick a cloud-focused mapping provider who offers important value propositions such as scalability, security, performance, and uptime guarantees.

4. Avoid Common Mapping Faux Pas

Please the new mapping user by avoiding these 3 common mapping faux pas: Mistake #1 is forcing users to learn a new tool. Mapping hieroglyphics will only create resistance and intimidation for the user if they don’t understand what they’re looking at. Mistake #2 is making users think about mapping; new mapping should be seamless for the end-user by customizing the user interface to make it highly usable. Mistake #3 is what we call “Loading Map Syndrome” – new users won’t wait for a map to load. Optimize your data for the web environment to achieve a responsive and interactive mapping experience.

5. Invest the Time in Making Mapping Work Well for Your Users

With the explosion of new users, applications, delivery models and devices, you need to accept and embrace these changes to make it successful for your organization. Remember that mapping is now a means to an end. Leverage the cloud to save you time in building and maintaining your mapping application; spend your extra time tailoring mapping to exactly what your users are trying to accomplish in their everyday tasks. Because maps are an ideal data integration and access platform, integrate mapping into what your users are already working with to get more value with the data you’ve already invested in. This also helps in minimizing training and additional costs.

LandVision Customers are Saving Time and Money

Understanding the need for location technology, our LandVision™ customers are putting maps in the hands of their users. As part of our webinar presentation, we highlighted 3 case studies that told the stories of an electric utility company, engineering firm and state agency who have successfully deployed LandVision™.

With this robust map-based research, analysis and collaboration tool, the electric utility company was successful in minimizing cost and training, increasing the distribution of their GIS data, and bringing spatial technology to thousands of their employees.

The engineering firm achieved centralization by creating a single repository to house property, location and project data in one system, while the state agency gained efficiency by integrating mapping into their everyday tasks by being able to easily identify, track and remediate agricultural hazards and exotic pests.

In this new era of mapping, embracing technology and using it to overcome the challenges in your organization today will help you succeed. With the right mapping solution, you can implement the best practice tips mentioned above to leverage the power of place for all departments in your organization.
